We all love a facial, but few of us know what it is exactly about the massage techniques that work such wonders on our skin. When the skin on your face is being massaged and smoothed during a facial, the response from within is very positive. Frequent facial massaging can improve the look of your skin by stimulating an abundance of oxygen to the skin cells. With this come valuable nutrients which help to boost the natural radiance of the complexion. Skin health overall is improved as toxins and other impurities are coaxed out of the epidermis.
There are some simple techniques for use at home, and can be employed when applying all of the products in your skincare routine. For example, applying mild pressure to the inner corner of the eye socket can increase eye brightness and firmness. This can be achieved by lightly tapping a small amount of Revitalise and Glow Serum around the eye and increasing the pressure on the inner corner. Taking time to focus on gentle massage when applying your skincare products can really help to improve your skin’s brightness and radiance.
Massaging the face regularly improves lymphatic drainage, which is the body’s way of detoxifying and is crucial for healthy looking skin but also healthy organs, blood and immune system. Regular facial massage also improves the efficacy of all the lovely products you put on to the skin, so make sure you book yourself in for that facial and take your time when applying your products between treatments.
Let us know if you have any great mini-facial tips and tricks, we’d love to hear from you!

The second installment of Dr Kate Ordish’s skin tutorial is all about the structure and first layer of the skin, the epidermis. We have decided to post her informative blogs to give you a better idea of how our body’s largest organ functions. Over to Kate!
…………………………………………………………………………………………………………..
What is in skin?
Skin is composed of 3 layers: An outer layer (epidermis), inner layer (dermis) and the fatty subcutaneous layer. Our hair, nails, sweat and sebaceous glands are all part of the skin. Each layer has a separate function to help regulate the body’s internal environment (homeostasis), gain the nutrients it needs, and release secretions that control the skin’s pH level and hydrate the outer layers.
The Epidermis:
The epidermis is the top layer of skin. It contains the cells that produce keratin (a protein that helps the protective function of the skin) and melanin (the pigment that gives us our skin colour, is the main factor in tanning, and protects us from UV light), the cells that relay important sensory information to the brain, and the cells that connect the surface of the skin to the immune system. It can range in depth from 0.1mm on the fragile areas around the eyes to 1.4mm on the soles of the feet.
The main cells of the epidermis are keratinocytes. These develop from the base of the epidermis , and divide and mature over 3- 4 weeks to eventually flake off at the surface. Once the cells die, their cytoplasm (the components in the cell) is converted to keratin. Keratin is a strong, fibrous protein that forms strong bonds and helps to maintain the skin’s structure. It is also the key structural component of both hair and nails.
Other important cells in this layer are melanocytes (that sit at the base of the epidermis and supply keratincytes with melanin, protecting the skin from the effects of UV light and giving the skin it’s colour) and Langerhans cells – immune cells that pick up foreign bodies that are perceived as a threat to the body (antigens) and migrate through the lymph system to set off a chain reaction that results in more white blood cells travelling to the area to deal with the antigen. During inflammation, there are several more of these cells present in the skin, along with T lymphocytes that produce cytokines (signalling molecules secreted by certain white blood cells) and trigger an immune response.

Thanks Kate! Next time we will learn about the next two layers of the skin: the dermis and subcutaneous layer.

Congested skin (meaning clogged pores, an oily t-zone or blackheads) can be a real nightmare to hydrate and balance. The key step in the skincare routine for people with congested skin is cleansing. At Aurelia Probiotic Skincare we talk a lot about the importance of cleansing the skin because fresh, clean skin absorbs products more effectively, and is much more likely to look glowing and dewy. For those of us with congested skin, cleansing away impurities, dirt, grime and make-up is imperative so as not to cause even more blocking.
A key ingredient for decongesting the skin is eucalyptus, whose cooling properties have been used for healing and clearing for centuries. Our creamy, aromatic Miracle Cleanser is perfect for clearing congested skin as it contains an uplifting blend of eucalyptus, chamomile, rosemary and bergamot. The combination of eucalyptus and chamomile ensures that the Miracle Cleanser will help to clear pores, while soothing existing break-outs.
Using our Monday to Sunday Bamboo Muslins (which are currently sold out at Net-A-Porter.com!) will ensure that skin is lightly exfoliated so excess oil is removed without stripping the skin, which can cause even more oil to be produced, and fresher skin cells are revealed.
Aurelia Probiotic Skincare is suitable for all skin types and can benefit all kinds of different skin concerns.

Over the next few weeks we will be posting a number of blogs to give you more of an insight about skin and how it functions. The scientific part of skincare can be hard to understand, so we hope that these blogs will help. Over to Kate for her expert knowledge of our most important organ!
……………………………………………………………………………………………………
My name is Dr Kate Ordish, and I have been asked by Aurelia founder, Claire Vero, to talk about the basic structure and function of the skin, how it works, and why it is so important to look after it.
You don’t need to be a Doctor to know that how our skin looks and feels can have a big impact on us both physically and psychologically – and Claire, like me, believes that the more educated we are about our own bodies, the better we are able to look after them.
So – let’s start with the most obvious question:
What is skin?
Our skin is a network of cells covering the entire surface of our body, protecting our inner world from the harsh environment of the outside world. The skin is the largest and one of the most important organs in the human body. Ranging from a surface area of approximately 1.5 to 2 metres squared, and weighing up to 9Ib – it needs looking after.
What does it do?
More than you might think! Skin acts as the first line of defence from microorganisms, the more harmful effects of sunlight, as well as any form of solid, liquid or gas that we may come in to contact with. It synthesises Vitamin D, helping our bodies to absorb more Calcium for stronger bones and teeth. Our skin acts as a thermo-regulator to help control internal body temperature, gives us the perception of touch, pain and pressure sensation, and is part of the structure that holds everything together!
……………………………………………………………………………………………………
Thanks Kate! Next week we’ll be sharing information on the structure and the layers making up the skin.
